“The global decline in biodiversity remains alarming. The main causes include deforestation, changes in habitat and land degradation, often linked to the growing impact of climate change,” declares the Secretary General of the United Nations on the International Day for Biological Diversity.





Under the patronage of her Excellency the Minister of the State Ministry for Environment Affairs, Dr. Kawkab Sabah Al Dayeh and in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme in Syria (UNDP), an event titled “Your planet needs you!! Unite to Combat Climate Change” will take place today in the Al-Asad National Library, Damascus, at 6.00 pm.
Damascus University , in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor and UNDP, launched the Career Management Centre at the University this morning, May 13th, at 10.00.
TAWASUL, a new online network for journalists under the age of 30 established with the support the Minister of Information of the Syrian Arab Republic and UNDP, will be officially launched on 27 May 2009. The network is the result of the collaboration between the United Nations Development Programme in Syria, the Knight International Journalism Fellowships Program of the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), and the Ministry of Information of the Syrian Arab Republic and is also co-funded by the Government of the United Kingdom.
Within the framework of the Women’s Empowerment & Poverty Alleviation Project jointly implemented by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor & the United Nations Development Programme, the disbursement of the first round of loans was launched in the governorates of Dara’a, Raqqa and Lattakia, aimed at empowering women socially and economically. The project provides comprehensive packages of training courses (business and social development) and microfinance services for women between the ages of 18 to 55 years old.
