Description / Overview:
The project aims to assist the Syrian Government in the establishment of an Agro-Industrial Special Economic Zone (Agropolis). The aim of this zone is to attract international private investment in the agro-industrial domain through the setting up of an adequate fiscal frame-work, and a high quality services infra-structure, as well as to increase export and cultivation of value added crops.
Objectives:
Conduct socio-economic and environmental feasibility study
Support the drafting the legal framework for governing the Special Economic Zone
Draft a comprehensive project document and work plan
Target Beneficiaries:
The Private sector
Local farmers and communities
Implementation Strategy:
- Conduct filed visits to Al Ghab for needs assessment.
- Identify an international consultant to provide comparative studies on legal frameworks in other special economic zones in the region
- Formulate the project document
Achievements / Current Status:
Support in drafting a legal framework for the Special Economic Zone.
Conduct several missions to Al Ghab Region in order to meet the local communities and get the agreement of all stakeholders on the components of the comprehensive Project Document.
Full Fledged Project Document is signed with the Syrian Government and in cooperation with FAO and UNIDO.
