Description / Overview:
The project aims at supporting the ongoing efforts to reform the Labour Market and Employment Policy in Syria and developing human resources in order to achieve MDG’s by combating poverty. More importantly, this project helps implementing the Five-Year Plan, in which great emphasis is put on creating more work opportunities, decreasing the rate of unemployment and adopting new policies and programmes that promote the social safety nets.
Objectives:
The project aims at developing a sufficiently extensive and robust database, within MOSAL, that permits the formulation of a rational and comprehensive labour force policy to reduce unemployment and increase labour productivity. This will help in reducing the regional disparities in relation to unemployment

Implementation Strategy:
- Conduct two surveys:
- The household-based labour force sample survey, which will give a picture of employment and underemployment situation in the country and update the information outlined in the 1993 labour force survey.
- The national institution-based survey of the labour force, which will give information on the demand side of the labour market.
- Draft a Comprehensive report to analyze the data resulted from the two surveys.
Achievements / Current Status:
- Project Document was signed and project staff were recruited
- Finalized the household survey questionnaire.
- Determined the sample and sampling method used.
- Finalized the Enterprise based survey questionnaire that will identify the demand side of the labour market.
- Provide technical capacity development to the national team in labour market information research and tools.
- Conduced labour market analysis between the supply and demand sides during the Job Fair ‘08.
- Conducted the Household Labour Market Survey to collect information about the supply side of the labour market.
- Conducted the Enterprise based Labour Market Survey to collect information about the demand side of the labour market.
- Start preparing the final report of the Labour Market analysis that will assist MOSAL in formulating the comprehensive national labour market policy in Syria.
- Finalizing the labour market report
